The Rise of the ANZ Technology Scene: What It Means for Engineering Talent
Published 15 March 2026
Australia's technology sector contributed $167 billion to the economy in 2024, a figure that's grown at roughly 10% per year for the past five years. The New Zealand market, while smaller, has seen equally impressive growth in digital-first and SaaS businesses.
This growth is creating extraordinary opportunity — and extraordinary pressure on talent supply. The Engineering Institute of Technology estimated a shortage of over 60,000 technology workers in Australia alone in 2024, a gap that universities and immigration programs are struggling to close.
For engineering leaders, this creates a clear strategic imperative: access to the right talent, at the right time, is a competitive advantage. The companies that figure out how to build and scale technical capability faster than their competitors will have a structural edge.
Three trends are reshaping how forward-looking organisations are approaching this challenge.
First, the shift from ownership to access. The most sophisticated engineering leaders are moving away from the idea that they need to own all the capability in their team permanently. They're thinking in terms of capability portfolios that can be assembled, scaled, and reconfigured as their product and business needs evolve.
Second, the normalisation of global talent pools. The remote-work revolution that COVID accelerated has permanently expanded the geographic boundaries of who can be considered for an engineering role. Engineers in Southeast Asia, South Asia, and Eastern Europe are now genuine candidates for Australian teams — not as a compromise, but as a first choice.
Third, the premium on talent operations. As the talent market tightens, companies that invest in their talent operations — their ability to find, attract, assess, and onboard engineers faster than the competition — are seeing outsized returns. Talent acquisition is becoming a core engineering capability, not just an HR function.
The ANZ technology scene is growing up. The winners will be the organisations that recognise this shift and build their talent strategies accordingly.
